THIS WEDNESDAY, THE ANNUAL WHITE ELEPHANT CHRISTMAS EVENT AT THE MEETING. THIS MEETING, THE FINAL ONE FO 2014.
AT TODAY'S MEETING (12-17-'14) .....ABOVE, THE TABLE WITH THE WHITE ELEPHANT PACKAGES....18. EVERYTHING FROM HOME MADE CANDY, TO A SANTA RED PURSE. ALL WENT WELL AND EVERYONE SEEMED TO
HAVE A GOOD TIME, WITH LOTS "STEALING".....OR SHOULD WE SAY "TRADING" OF GIFTS. LOTS OF FUN AND LAUGHS.

THAT HE AND BARB MILLER HAVE RUN
FOR 28 YEARS....FIRST STARTED IN 1987.
SINCE THEN, 16,000 THOUSAND CHILDREN AND
SENIORS HAVE BEEN GIVEN PRESENTS OFF
THE TREES AT M-S-B BANK AND US BANK.
THIS YEAR, FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE
NUMBERS ARE DOWN A LITTLE. LAST
YEAR, 450 KIDS WERE SIGNED UP AND THIS
YEAR, 397. THE SENIORS TREE IS ABOUT
THE SAME AS LAST YEAR, 125. THIS IS A
PROJECT OF MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY
SERVICES WHICH ALSO RUNS THE USED
CLOTHING STORE AT DAC ON WEST PLATT.

ADRIENNE WILLIAMSON, AN ATTORNEY WITHTHE PILLERS & RICHMAN LAW OFFICE JUST NORTH
OF THE HURST HOTEL IS THE NEW MEMBER THAT
RECEIVED HER OFFICIAL WELCOME TODAY. SHE
AND HUSBAND ERICK JUST CELEBRATED THEIR
5TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND HAVE PURCHSED
A HOME ON WEST QUARRY STREET. THEY HAVE
NO CHILDREN. SHE IS AT THE MAQUOKETA FULL
TIME AND THE OWNERS OF THE FIRM COME TO
MAQUOKETA TO ASSIST HER WHEN NEEDED.
ROTARIAN JOHN GILROY GETS CREDIT FOR BRINGING
HER TO ROTARY MEMBERSHIP. JOHN AT RIGHT, AND
PRESIDENT SCOTT WARREN TO LEFT. NICE TO HAVE
ADRIENNE AS A NEW MEMBER. SHE IS NOW THE 7TH
WOMAN IN THE CLUB. AND WE WELCOME MORE!

JOB, AS AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA IN
CEDAR FALLS. IF THEY MOVE TO CEDAR
FALLS, WE WILL LOOSE HIM AS A MEMBER.
THAT WOULD NOT BE GOOD.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM....
ROTARIAN NORM KENNEDY WAS IN CHARGE OF THE PROGRAM TODAY AND
INVITED SCOTT HANSEN OF THE MAQUOKETA POLICE DEPARTMENT TO THE MEETING TO TELL ABOUT HIS JOB AS SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER FOR THE
MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT. SCOTT HAS BEEN WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT OVER 10 YEARS AND HAS BEEN RESOURCE OFFICER FOR THREE. HE SPENDS MOST OF HIS WEEKLY TIME AT THE MIDDLE AND
HIGH SCHOOLS WITH SOME TIME EACH WEEK ALSO AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. HE IS ALSO NEARING 20 YEARS IN THE ARMY RESERVES AND
HAS BEEN TWICE CALLED TO DUTY OVERSEAS, INCLUDING A TOUR IN
AFGANISTAN.
ROTARIAN JOHN GILROY THIS WEEK MADE THE MEMBERSHIP ROUND ASKING IF ANYONE HAD GOOD NEWS TO SHARE, AND IF SO, TO DONATE SOME MONEY TO THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND, ALONG WITH THE NEWS. JOHN, LEFT,ACCEPTS A $10 BILL FROM ROTARIAN DENNIS HASENBANK. NORMALLY......THE DONATION IS A DOLLAR OR TWO, BUT DENNIS HAD SPECIAL GOOD NEWS AND WANTED TO GIVE $10. EARLIER THIS WEEK, WHILE ON A VISIT TO CEDAR RAPIDS, HIS WIFE FELL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL AND THE CAR WENT DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND....SHE WAS LUCKY AND NOT A SCRATCH.
DENNIS SAID HE VISITED THE SCENE AFTER (SHE WAS DRIVING ALONE) AND FROM WHAT HE COULD SEE, SHE WAS LUCKY TO BE ALIVE.
PRESIDENT SCOTT WAS ABSENT TODAY AND SO CLYDE HARPER FILLED IN.
MEATLOAF, GREEN BEANS, MASHED POTATOES AND PEA SALAD....GAVE EVERYONE ENERGY FOR THE REST OF THE WORK DAY... AND THE MEETING WAS OVER AT 1 P.M.

THE GUEST SPEAKER AT ROTARY TODAY, NOVEMBER 12TH, WAS GINGER SCHOOP OF ANDREW, AND THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE
ANNA B. LAWTHER ACADEMY IN MAQUOKETA.
THE ACADEMY IS LOCATED IN THE ROSENBERG BUILDING JUST NORTH OF OLD CITY HALL. THE ACADEMY WAS FORMERLY NAMED, THE HILLCREST SCHOOL. IT WAS THEN, AND IS NOW, A DIVISION OF HILLCREST FAMILY SERVICES AND IT HAS PRE-SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES FOR SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS OF ALL AGES FROM THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT AND SURROUNDING DISTRICTS. IT GETS LOTS OF HELP FROM THE ANDREW AMVETS, THE MAQUOKETA YMCA, AND METHODIST AND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHES. IT GENERALLY HAS FROM 25 TO 30 STUDENTS EACH YEAR AND IT HAS A STAFF OF 17 AND HAS A NECESSARY HIGH TEACHER TO STUDENT RATIO.
GINGER IS VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE ACADEMY AND BROUGHT ALONG
SEVERAL STUDENTS WHO YOU COULD TELL, LIKE THE SCHOOL AND GINGER.
HER ACADEMY IS A REAL ASSET TO MAQUOKETA WITH SO MANY ONE-OF-A-KIND PERSONS AND PLACES. THANKS TO ROTARIAN ASHER SCHROEDER

HE WAS BORN IN CARROLL, IOWA. PAT IS FROM EAGLE GROVE.
THERE WERE 8 BOYS AND 0 GIRLS IN HIS FAMILY. GLEN, IOWA CITY, AGE 69....DICK, PHOENIX, 75....DONALD, MARSHALLTOWN, AGE 77....JOHNNY,
STEAM BOAT ROCK, AGE 79....TED, AGE 82....JIM DIED IN TEXAS AND
THE OLDEST, GEORGE, LIVES IN WEBSTER CITY AND IS 85. IN 1951, TED STARTED WORKING FOR AL MEYER AT THE GREEN BAY LUMBER COMPANY (EAST PLATT STREET) IN MAQUOKETA. IN 1953 HE WAS DRAFTED INTO THE ARMY FOR TWO YEARS, TAKING BASIC AT FORT CHAFFEE, ARKANSAS.
SERVED MUCH OF HIS TIME IN GERMANY. THEN BACK TO LUMBER YARDS
AFTER THE SERVICE, IN CARROLL, CHARTER OAK, EAGLE GROVE (MET PAT THERE) AND BACK TO MAQUOKETA IN 1963 AND PURCHASED THE MAQUOKETA LUMBER COMPANY IN 1969. HE SOLD A LOT OF 2 BY 4'S AND NAILS IN HIS LIFE. HE HAS ALSO SERVED A LOT OF CAKE AND ICE CREAM
IN MAQUOKETA AT ABOUT 35 OR MORE ROTARY ICE CREAM SOCIALS.....
SERVING AS CHAIRMAN FOR ALL. HE HARDLY EVER MISSES A MEETING OF ROTARY, EXCEPT WHEN WINTERING A LITTLE DOWN SOUTH. HE'S BEEN A GREAT ROTARIAN, WHILE LIVING LIFE ACCORDING TO THE 4-WAY TEST.
ROTARY PROGRAM TODAY, OCTOBER

TRACY WALLER, A MEMBER OF THE MAQUOKETA SPORTS BOOSTERS CLUB FOR ABOUT 8 YEARS AND THE CURRENT PRESIDENT. SHE TOLD THE GOALS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE CLUB.
THE CLUB PURCHASED THE GOODENOW FIELD
SCOREBOARD AT A COST OF $75,000. AND
THEY BUY EQUIPMENT LIKE FOOTBALL HELMETS (OVER $400 EACH) AND SPONSOR YOUTH PROGRAMS AND HOLD OTHER FUND RAISERS.
ROTARIAN SUPT. CHRIS HOOVER THANKED HER
AND THE CLUB FOR THE GREAT JOB THEY HAVE DONE AND ARE STILL DOING FOR MAQUOKETA
ATHLETICS. SOME TIME WAS ALSO SPENT
TALKING ABOUT LOW ATTENDANCE BY STUDENTS AND ADULTS AT SPORTING EVENTS.
THE CLUB IS WORKING ON IDEAS TO BUILD
ATTENDANCE AND WELCOMES COMMENTS.

THEY SOLD EACH YEAR FOR 10 YEARS AT $10 EACH.
THEY ARE NOW COLLECTOR PLATES WORTH MAYBE MILLIONS.
SORRY THEY PLATES ARE A LITTLE OUT OF FOCUS. THE CAMERA WAS TOO CLOSE TO PLATE WHEN PHOTO WAS TAKEN.

MARK BECK, MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT CHIEF, WAS THE GUEST SPEAKER AT ROTARY TODAY, OCT 22ND. HE TOLD ABOUT HOW HE
GOT STARTED WITH THE DEPARTMENT 32 YEARS AGO AND SOME INTERESTING THINGS FROM THEN UNTIL NOW. THE DEPARTMENT IS AT 33 MEMBERS NOW AND HAS 2 OPENINGS. FOR HIM, IT TAKES A NIGHT A WEEK FOR TRAINING AND MEETINGS.
THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB HAS A COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT THIS FRIDAY.
QUITE A FEW ROTARIANS WILL BE SELLING TICKETS AT GOODENOW FIELD FOR THE MAQUOKETA-INDEPENDENCE FOOTBALL GAME.
ROTARIANS HAVE BEEN DOING THIS AT NO CHARGE FOR ONE FOOTBALL GAME A YEAR, FOR MANY YEARS.

THIS SATURDAY FROM 9 UNTIL 10 A.M. 6 - 8 ROTARIANS AGAIN WILL PICK-UP TRASH ON THE DESIGNATED HIGHWAY. ROTARY DOES THIS TWICE A YEAR AND ROTARIAN KEN WRIGHT
IS CHAIR PERSON FOR THIS JOB.
