ROTARY WEEK VOL 6 NO 31


JUNE 12, 2019 MEETING HEARD JUDGE TABOR TALK.
PHIL TABOR OF MAQUOKETA IS A 7TH JUDICIAL ASSOCIATE  DISTRICT JUDGE,
COVERING SEVERAL COUNTIES.   HE SPENDS MOST OF HIS TIME IN CLINTON
COUNTY AND COMES TO JACKSON COUNTY ONCE A MONTH FOR JUVENILE
CASES.    HIS  WIFE NANCY IS FULL JUDGE, NOT ASSOCIATE, IN THE 7TH DISTRICT TOO AND HAS COMPLETED 20 YEARS AND WILL RETIRE IN SEPTEMBER.
BOTH HAVE HANDLED THOUSANDS OF CASES.   PHIL MENTIONED NO RETIREMENT
PLANS AND WILL ALSO CONTINUE TO GROW AND DISTRIBUTE SOME OF THE
BEST SWEETCORN IN HIS DISTRICT.    IT IS A FUN TIME HOBBIE FOR HIM EACH
SUMMER.

NEXT WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19TH, NO NOON-TIME MEETING AND INSTEAD THE
ANNUAL ROTARY ICE CREAM AND HOME-MADE CAKE SOCIAL AND BAND
CONCERT AT THE FAIRGROUNDS, STARTING AT 5:30.     GOOD FUN, CONVERSATION,
CAKE, ICE CREAM AND BEVERAGE...ALL FREE FOLLOWED BY THE TIMBER
CITY BAND DIRECTED BY MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND DIRECTOR JAY KAHN,
AND CONSIDERED A WORLD-AUTHORITY ON BAND MUSIC.     JAY AND HIS
HIGH SCHOOL AND OLDER BAND MEMBERS HAVE PLAYED FOR ROTARY, AT
NO CHARGE, FOR UMTEEN YEARS.    BUT, EVEN LONGER, MUCH LONGER,
THE YEARS THAT ROTARIAN TED MAZE HAS BEEN CHAIRMAN OF THE
ICE CREAM AND BAND EVENT.

ROTARY WEEK VOL 6 NO 29


THE ROTARY PROGRAM TODAY WAS DONE BY HEATHER MOORE, WHO WITH
HUSBAND BRANDON, OWN MOORE FARMS BUSINESS IN MAQUOKETA.
SHE TOLD ABOUT THEIR NEW LOCATION ON WEST PLATT STREET ACROSS
FROM DOLLAR GENERAL THAT OPENED LAST WEEK.    IT IS MUCH LARGER
THAN THE OLD LOCATION ACROSS FROM THE THEATRE AND  HAS A FREE
PARKING LOT.     THE MOORES HAVE 4 CHILDREN.   SHE HELD THE BABY WHILE GIVING HER PROGRAM AND A LITTLE OLDER SON WAS ALSO IN ROOM
WITH MOM.

GUEST OF DENNIS AND NANCY WAS CARTER DWYER, JUNIOR AT CAL-WHEAT AND
"SHADOWING" AT KMAQ.    HE WOULD DO WELL IN RADIO.....GOOD VOICE AND READER.   NEVER HAD BEEN TO A SERVICE CLUB MEETING.    THIS SUMMER..
WHEN HIGH SCHOOL KIDS HAVE TIME, INVITE A HIGH SCHOOLER TO A MEETING.
WE NEED TO GET THEM THINKING EARLY ABOUT IMPORTANCE TO A COMMUNITY
OF A SERVICE CLUB.


BIG TURN OUT.  IF REGULARS SALLY, ROGER AND  ASHER WOULD HAVE BEEN
AT MEETING, WE WOULD HAVE HAD A FULL HOUSE AND WOULD HAVE  HAD
TO BRING IN MORE CHAIRS.      WHERE WERE THEY????


DEPUTY SCHROEDER HAD THE PROGRAM ABOUT THE PROPOSED NEW JAIL AND
THE NEXT BOND ELECTION AUGUST 6TH.     MOST IF NOT ALL MAQUOKETA ROTARIANS ARE IN FAVOR OF THE CURRENT PLANS.

ABOUT THE HUMANE SOCIETY AND SHELTER JUST NORTHEAST OF MAQUOKETA.   SHE LOVES ANIMALS, WITH  DOGS, CATS,  DONKEYS AND HORSES ON
THEIR (KEN) FARM EAST OF MAQUOKETA.    NO ANIMALS ARE PUT DOWN BY THE  JACKSON COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY.   THIS MORNING, FOR ADOPTION,
23 CATS AND 18  DOGS.

THE ANNUAL ROTARY SENIOR SCHOLAR DINNER DATE IS WEDNESDAY, MAY 8TH, AT 6 P.M. AT THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN MAQUOKETA.

2ND WEEK OF MARCH AND WARMER WEATHER HAS  ARRIVED.

OUR MARCH 13TH PROGRAM WAS BY AMANDA LASSANCE,
THE ASSISTANT JACKSON COUNTY ATTORNEY.
IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE MURDER TRIAL HERE IN FEBRUARY
FOR DREW MANGLER OF DUBUQUE.    MANGLER WAS FOUND
GUILTY FOR 2ND DEGREE MURDER (AROUND XMAS 2016) OF
JIM RAMAKEL OF BELLEVUE.    SHE GAVE A GOOD, INTERESTING
DESCRIPTION OF THE MURDER AND THE TRAIL THAT CAME
MORE THAN TWO YEARS AFTER OF MURDER WHEN A PAIR
OF MANGLER'S SHOES WERE FOUND WITH BLOOD  STAINS,
THE BLOOD OF   RAMAKEL.  
LASSANCE HAS BEEN AST.  ATTORNEY FOR 6 YEARS.

ROTARIAN JACK WILLEY HAD THE PROGRAM AND HE PRESENTED A NEW COUNTY EMPLOYEE....KIMBERLY GRANDINETTI.    SINCE NOVEMBER SHE HAS BEEN
THE JACKSON COUNTY HEALTH ADMINISTRATOR.  
SHE HAS A SON AGE 20 AND TWO YOUNGER DAUGHTERS.

IT IS THE WEEK OF COACH BILL FLEMING'S FUNERAL...THIS SATURDAY.
33 YEARS AS COACH OF MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ... 500 WINS.
SPOKE TO ROTARY MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS.
BILL ABOVE WITH ROTARIAN NANCY MOORE.
HE DIED LAST WEEK FROM A LONGTIME LUNG PROBLEM, AT THE AGE OF 77.
HE WILL BE BURIED AT MT. HOPE CEMETERY.































MAYOR DON SCHWENKER SPOKE TO ROTARY TODAY.   BECAUSE OF WEATHER,
SPARSE ATTENDANCE.
THE MAYOR SAID THE NOW ESTIMATED $11 MILLION RE-BUILD OF HIGHWAY 64
THROUGH MAQUOKETA MAY NOT GET STARTED UNTIL 2001 AND WILL TAKE
TWO, MAYBE 3 YEARS TO COMPLETE.

LONGTIME KMAQ EMPLOYEE (44 YEARS)  LEIGHTON HEPKER DIED LAST
FRIDAY AND HIS FUNERAL WILL BE THIS THURSDAY AT FIRST LUTHERAN
CHURCH IN MAQUOKETA.    MORE ABOUT HIM ON THE KMAQ WEB SITE.
HE WAS 65 AND WAS HIRED BY FELLOW ROTARIAN DENNIS VOY IN 1975 AS
NEWS AND SPORTS DIRECTOR AND WAS NAMED STATION MANAGER OF
KMAQ IN 1981.

THE ROTARY PROGRAM WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16TH, WAS ABOUT THE
NEW DOG PARK TO GO AT HORSESHOE POND PARK.

ARE PARTNERS IN A MICRO-BREWERY IN BELLEVUE.
THERE ARE TWO OTHER BELLEVUE COUPLES THE 
RUN THE WEEKEND BUSINESS, INCLUDING KELLY HUENEKE, SHOWN HERE.   THE MEETING WENT OVER IN TIME AND THERE WERE MORE QUESTIONS THAN 
GENERATED BY ANY OTHER RECENT PROGRAM.
GUESS IT IS PROOF....MAQUOKETA ROTARIANS
LIKE BEER.
