OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER IN MAQUOKETA.     IF YOU ARE A JOHNNY CASH FAN AND JUNE CARTER CASH FAN, YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS THIS  SHOW.    ADVANCE TICKETS ARE $22 AND AT THE DOOR, $25.    ADVANCE TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW AT OHNWARD ANY MORNING, AND ALSO AT     OSTERHAUS PHARMACY AND THE MAIN OFFICE OF THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK.    THE DOORS WILL OPEN (AND BAR TOO) AT 6 P.M. THE ROTARY PROGRAM FEBRUARY 26, 2014
 
MEET MATT OTTING.         FIRST, HE DOES NOT HAVE A SPOT ON HIS SHIRT,  
THE CAMERA PICKED UP SOMETHING.                MATT IS IN CHARGE OF RECYCLING AT DAC IN MAQUOKETA.   THIS PAST YEAR, 2.8 MILLION POUNDS WERE PROCESSED,  A LARGE AMOUNT FOR A SMALL COMMUNITY.
CARDBOARD, SOME PLASTICS, GLASS,  PAPER, EVEN CLOTHES....ALL LEFT AT DROP-OFF BOXES OR BROUGHT TO DAC FROM THE CITIES AND TOWNS OF JACKSON COUNTY.    SORTING IS DONE BETWEEN 8 AND 2:30 EACH WEEKDAY BY ABOUT 6 DAC EMPLOYEES.   INDIVIDUAL OR CLUB TOURS ARE
WELCOME AND WILL SHOW YOU HOW IMPORTANT RECYCLING IS.

ROTARY WEEK (FEB 17-23)




SILENT AUCTION ITEMS
 ARE COMING BACK SOON
HERE ON THE ROTARY WEB SITE.
PASTOR JUDY HEINRICH (MAQUOKETA NATIVE) WAS THE GUEST SPEAKER AT ROTARY ON FEBRUARY 19TH.    SHE IS ONE OF TWO PASTORS AT FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IN MAQUOKETA (PAST 7 YEARS) AND IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE MAQUOKETA MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATON (PAST 4 YEARS) AND SHE TOLD  WHAT THE ASSOCIATION IS AND WHAT IT DOES.   ALL CHURCHES BELONG,  AND THEY MEET MONTHLY AND PLAN UPCOMING PROJECTS IN THE COMMUNITY.    THEY BIGGEST THING THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR IS
SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNITY CUPBOARD.    AND THE NEED IS GROWING!


ROTARIAN ROGER STEWART BROUGHT A GUEST TO ROTARY THIS WEEK.
SEATED IN THE MIDDLE IS MARY JO GOTHARD OF NEAR BELLEVUE.  SHE'S   THE DIRECTOR OF THE JACKSON COUNTY FOUNDATION.   ROGER POINTED OUT THAT THE FOUNDATION THIS PAST YEAR GREW NEARLY $2-MILLION, FROM 5 TO $7-MILLION.     ROTARIAN TERRY SLATTERY IS ON HER RIGHT AND
ALSO IN THE PHOTO, GUEST SPEAKER JUDY HEINRICH.    
WHAT'S THIS YOU SAY?   IT IS A PHOTO ROTARIAN DAVE UPDEGRAPH TOOK USING HIS NEW DRONE, THAT HE GAVE A ROTARY PROGRAM ABOUT EARLIER THIS MONTH.    IN THE MIDDLE, MAQUOKETA STATE BANK AND KMAQ IS THE BROWN BUILDING TO THE TOP RIGHT OF BANK.    HE HAD TO WAIT FOR SOME GOOD  WEATHER TO TAKE IT AND IT CAME OUT GOOD.

THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB CONGRATULATES THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BOY'S BOWLING TEAM, GOING TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK IN DES MOINES.

ROTARY WEEK (VALENTINE WEEK)


AGAIN THIS YEAR, FOR THE 25TH YEAR IN A ROW, THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB CO-SPONSORED THE "FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE"  AWARDS WITH THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AT THE ANNUAL 2-DAY
"KMAQ FARM AND  HOME SHOW" AT THE FAIRGROUNDS IN MAQUOKETA.
THERE WAS A GOOD TURN-OUT FOR THE AWARDS AND 12 ROTARIANS
WERE IN ATTENANCE TO SEE PRESIDENT SCOTT WARREN HAND OUT THE
PLAQUES.   THE WINNERS BELOW:
THE PUBLIC SERVICE PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD WENT TO MARY HAYWARD OF RURAL MAQUOKETA.    SHE HAS BEEN VERY INSTRUMENTAL
IN THE MAQUOKETA FARMER'S MARKET.     HER FATHER, THE LATE BILL STEWART, WAS A LONGTIME MAQUOKETAR ROTARIAN AND STARTED THE
AWARDS PROGRAM FOR THE ROTARY 25 YEARS AGO.    IN PHOTO ABOVE,
AT LEFT AMBER MATHEISEN, DIRECTOR OF THE EXTENSION OFFICE AND AT RIGHT, MAQUOKETA ROTARY PRESIDENT SCOTT WARREN.
THE AGRI-BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD WENT TO BOB MITCHELL, JR., THE OWNER OF MITCHELL-MASKREY INC. FEED AND SEED IN MAQUOKETA, ONE OF MAQUOKETA'S OLDEST BUSINESS PLACES.
THE FARMER OF THE YEAR AWARD WAS PRESENTED TO LARRY AND  MARY LOU JOHNSON OF RURAL MAQUOKETA.   IN ADDITION TO THEIR FARMING OPERATION, THE JOHNSONS ARE VERY ACTIVE IN AG AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS AND EVENTS.

THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CONGRATULATES ALL THE WINNERS!

THE PROGRAM AT ROTARY WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12.....
JACKSON COUNTY ZONING ADMINISTRATOR BEN KOBER DID A VERY GOOD
JOB TELLING ABOUT HIS JOB!   INTERESTING PROGRAM!     HE IS IN HIS 4TH YEAR AND HIS OFFICE IS IN THE COURT HOUSE.      HE WAS BORN IN IOWA CITY, AND GREW UP IN WEST BRANCH AND GRADUATED FROM WARTBURG.    HIS WIFE IS A MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER.     AND... HE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO A NEW SECOND JOB THIS SPRING, BEING HEAD SOCCER COACH AT MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL.    HE PLAYED SOCCKE IN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE.

ROTARY WEEK


THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB 
MEETING THIS WEEK WILL BE THURS. (FEB 6, 2014)
AT THE KMAQ FARM AND HOME SHOW

THE "FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE" 3 AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED ON STAGE
AT 12:30 THURSDAY AND AGAIN THIS YEAR, SPONSORED BY THE
MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB AND THE AG COMMITTEE OF THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MAQUOKETA ROTARIAN ASHER SCHROEDER GAVE HIS TALK ABOUT SERVING IN WORLD WAR II AT MAQUOKETA STATE BANK LAST FRIDAY.    HE HAD GIVEN IT THE WEEK BEFORE AT THE REGULAR WEDNESDAY ROTARY MEETING.    ROTARIAN DENNIS VOY DID A VIDEO OF IT AND YOU CAN VIEW THAT VIDEO ON THE MAQUOKETA VFW WEB SITE.    JUST "GOOGLE" MAQUOKETA VFW AND THERE IT IS.   OR "GOOGLE" ROTARIAN DAVID UPDEGRAPH'S WEB SITE AND THE VIDEO IS THERE TOO.    IT IS ABOUT 45 MINUTES LONG.
ABOVE PHOTO IS OF DAVE AND CONNIE TJARKS AT THEIR  HOME IN
TENNESSEE.   CONNIE STOPPED IN AT KMAQ MONDAY.     THEY ARE UP THIS WAY VISITING FRIENDS IN JACKSON COUNTY AND IOWA CITY.     THEY HAVE
LIVED IN A RURAL HOME THEY PURCHASED A  YEAR AGO OCTOBER
NEAR LIBERTY, A TOWN OF 350.    IT IS A ONE-STORY 4-BEDROOM AND DEN HOME, IN THE MIDDLE OF A CLUSTER OF TREES AND THERE IS A LARGE SHOP BUILDING WITH IT, WHERE DAVE DOES HIS WOODWORKING.    THEY LIKE IT VERY MUCH DOWN THERE AND THE WEATHER IS MILDER THAN WE HAVE.     SHE PLAYS CARDS IN A CLUB EVERY MONDAY AND STILL RUNS HER
HERB WEB SITE, "KNOT ENOUGH THYME".   SHE MISSES ROTARY AND
WANTED DENNIS TO SAY "HI" TO ALL THE MEMBERS.    THEY LIVE AT 3300 PEA RIDGE ROAD, LIBERTY.   PHONE 563-249-2664.   EMAIL:  cktfarm@gmail.com
